Eli Manning led the New York Giants to a last-minute 21-17 win over the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl in Indianapolis on Feb. 5. Manning said a couple of months ago that he felt he was just as good as Patriots’ QB Tom Brady and then went out and proved it. It’s the second time Manning has guided his New York teammates to a Super Bowl win over New England as he also did it back in 2008.

The Giants marched 88 yards down the field and scored the winning touchdown with just 57 seconds left to play when Ahmad Bradshaw carried the ball in the end zone from just six yards out. Ironically, he tried not to score when he realized the Patriots were giving him the touchdown.

Patriots head coach Bill Belichick figured it’d be better to let the Giants score a touchdown so they could get the ball back for a chance to come back and win the game. He reasoned that the Giants would just run down the clock and attempt a short field goal if he didn’t allow the touchdown. The tactic made sense, but needless to say it failed.

Along with the two Super Bowl rings, Manning also has won the MVP award for both of the wins. However, the win wasn’t sealed until the last play was completed. Brady’s last-second hail-Mary pass dropped to the turf in the end zone as the game ended. Manning got off to a Super Bowl record start by completing his first nine passes. Brady then completed 16 in a row during the second and third quarters, which broke the previous mark of 13 set by Joe Montana.

Manning completed 30 out of 40 passes overall for a total of 296 yards with a touchdown. Brady completed 27 out of for 41, gaining 276 yards. He threw for two touchdown passes and an interception. Scoring late in a game is nothing new for manning since he led the giants to six comeback wins during the season and threw 15 touchdown passes in the last quarter of games for a new league record.

Manning said when he realized the Patriots were allowing them to score a touchdown he yelled at Bradshaw to tell him not to score. Bradshaw then appeared to try and stop, but tumbled into the New England end zone. The Patriots came close to pulling off a thrilling comeback, but tight end Rob Gronkowski couldn’t hang onto the final desperation pass from Brady. That meant Brady still needs one more Super Bowl win to tie Joe Montana’s and Terry Bradshaw’s record of four quarterback wins.

Brady did tie the record for Super Bowl appearances though along with Belichick since it was their fifth trip to the NFL’s championship game. However, they found themselves down 9-0 before pulling out into a third-quarter 17-9 lead. Scotsman Lawrence Tynes then kicked two field goals for the Giants to close the gap to 17-15, setting the stage for the final touchdown.

Sixty-five-year-old Giants’ head coach Tom Coughlin became the oldest coach to win the Super Bowl while the giants became the first team with a 9-7 record to win the trophy. It’s the fourth Super Bowl win for the Giants, who now trail Pittsburgh (6), Dallas and San Francisco (5) for the most wins.

Angelo Dundee, who was arguably the most famous boxing trainer in history, died at the age of 90 at home in Tampa, Florida on Feb. 1. Dundee recently celebrated the 70th birthday of his long-time friend and most famous fighter, Muhammad Ali, on Jan 14. Dundee’s death represents the end of an era in boxing as he was one of the oldest and most-respected trainers to have ever worked a corner.

Jimmy Dundee said his father was surrounded by family members when he passed away and is glad his dad had the chance to reminisce with Ali before he died. Dundee said his father suffered a blood clot a week before he died and was treated in hospital for it before being allowed to return home to his apartment. He added that his father was having trouble breathing the day he died and family members rushed to his home to spend the last few hours with him.

Dundee was also the trainer and motivator of several other huge boxing stars such as Sugar Ray Leonard, Willie Pastrano, George Foreman, Jose Napoles, and Carmen Basilio. Dundee was one of the most liked and respected men in boxing and always had a smile on his face and a joke on his tongue.

He’ll always be best remembered as being Ali’s trainer though since he guided the former heavyweight champion throughout his professional career. Dundee was more than just a corner man. He often motivated his fighters when they were in trouble during bouts, such as Ali in his first fight with Sonny Liston and Leonard during his first showdown with Tommy Hearns.

Promoter Bob Arum was planning on bringing Dundee and Ali together again on Feb. 18 for a charity gala event in Las Vegas. Arum said Dundee was boxing’s greatest motivator, no matter what the situation was and that’s why Ali loved him so much. During his six-decade career which took him around the world, Dundee trained 15 world champions and was honored by the sport for his magnificent corner work and training efforts in 1992 by being inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.

Dundee first met Ali back in 1959 in the fighter’s hometown of Louisville, Ky. Dundee was training Pastrano at the time and Ali, who was then named Cassius Clay and was a Golden Gloves champion, phoned Dundee’s hotel room and asked if he could come up and visit the trainer and Pastrano. Ali ended up talking boxing with the pair for over three hours.

Ali then won the gold medal in the light heavyweight division at the 1960 Olympics in Rome, Italy and ran into Dundee again in Louisville. Dundee asked Ali if he’d like to head down to Miami Beach to train with him at the legendary 5th Street Gym, but Ali said he couldn’t. However, a few months later one of Ali’s team members called Dundee to see if he’d work with Ali and that was the start of one of boxing’s most famous partnerships. Dundee guided Ali to the heavyweight title in February 1964 against Sonny Liston in Miami Beach.

Dundee, who was born in Philadelphia, always stood by Ali when the boxer was going through tough times with the black Muslims and the government for refusing induction into the army. Dundee was loyal to Ali and never tried to persuade him on his religious and political views and Ali said that’s the reason he loved his trainer.

There was always boxing in Dundee’s blood. His older brother Chris was a promoter and his brother Joe was a boxer. Angelo followed Chris to New York after the second World war and that’s where he got his feet wet in the sport. By the late 1940s he was handling cuts and tape hands in boxer’s corners and helping out trainers such as Ray Arcel and Charlie Goldman.

Just before Ali retired, Dundee started training Leonard and also trained Foreman for his title-winning fight against Michael Moorer in 1994. The 45-year-old Foreman became the oldest heavyweight champion in history that night with his last-round knockout over Moorer. Dundee will be sorely missed in the boxing game, but stories of his antics and training expertise will never die.

It was a terrible week for boxing. Along with Dundee, famed trainer 88-year-old Goody Petronelli, 63-year-old referee Wayne Kelly, and 21-year-old flyweight boxer Karlo Maquinto all passed away.

Aaron Rodgers, the star quarterback of the Green Bay Packers, was announced as the NFL’s most valuable player on Feb. 4 in a vote that was conducted by the Associated Press. Rodgers was by far the clear favorite with the national voting panel as he garnered 48 votes out of a possible 50, for a total of 96 per cent. The other two votes went to another quarterback, Drew Brees of the New Orleans Saints, who was named the top offensive player in the league this season.

Rodgers had an excellent season in 2011 when he set a new single-season mark for passer rating with 122.5 and also set club records for touchdown passes with 45 as well as 4,643 passing yards, a 68.3 per cent completion record, 9.25 yards per attempt, and a 7.5 touchdown to interception ratio. Rodgers also had eight games of 300-yards or more. Rodgers led Green Bay to the NFC North championship this season as they finished it with a near perfect record of 15-1.

Rodgers is now the fifth Green Bay player to win the NFL’s MVP award. Brett Favre won it from 1995 to 97, Paul Hornung was named the MVP in 1961 while Jim Taylor took the award in 1962 and Bart Starr won it in 1966. Quarterback Cam Newton of the Carolina Panthers was named the league’s offensive rookie of the year and linebacker Von Miller of the Denver Broncos was names as the top defensive rookie. Miller was named on 39 of the 50 ballots while linebacker Aldon Smith of the San Francisco 49ers was named on the remaining 11.

Miller is now the second Bronco to be named the Defensive Rookie of the Year. Linebacker Mike Croel won it back in 1991. Miller was drafted by Denver from Texas A&M with the second overall draft pick. He finished the season with 11.5 sacks and 64 tackles even though he played the last month of the season with a cast on his hand to protect his injured right thumb, which required surgery to repair.

Newton was taken number one overall in the draft by Carolina last year and threw for 21 touchdowns and 4,051 yards this season. He also threw for 17 interceptions. Newton became the first quarterback in NFL history to rush for more than 500 yards and pass for more than 4,000 during the same season. Newton rushed for a total of 706 yards which included 14 touchdowns, which broke the single-season record that Steve Grogan had held for the past 35 years.

Newton’s name appeared on 47 of the 50 ballots with quarterback Andy Dalton of the Cincinnati Bengals receiving the three other votes. Newton’s the first Carolina player to win the award. However, the Panther’s Julius Peppers, a defensive end, won the Defensive Rookie of the Year award back in 2002. Peppers now plays with the Chicago Bears.

There wasn’t any controversy during the WBC Middleweight Championship fight at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas on Feb. 4, but there was plenty of it afterwards. Chavez Jr. defended his title by unanimous decision over Marco Antonio Rubio in a decent, but not overly exciting fight, by scores of 115-113, 116-112, and 118-110.

Chavez struggled to make the middleweight limit of 160 lbs., but he did by weighing in at 159.5 lbs. However he then put 22 lbs. back on overnight and reportedly entered the ring at 181 lbs. while Rubio, who weighed in 1t 159, came into the ring at 171 lbs. The 10-pound difference in their weights was quite noticeable as Chavez was the much bigger and stronger man.

The fight was pretty uneventful until the last two rounds when the two Mexicans decided to slug it out. Chavez’s face was marked up after the 12 rounder as Rubio landed a lot of short, inside shots. The controversy came in the press conference when Rubio’s promotion team accused Chavez of ducking out on the WBC’s mandatory urine test which must be done by both fighters.

Rubio’s team said Chavez flew out of the dressing room after the bout and didn’t leave a urine sample. Chavez was asked about it during the post-fight press conference, but didn’t answer the question. Rubio’s team claimed they also asked Jose Sulaiman, the WBC president, and he simply said that Chavez forgot to leave a sample.

After a fight against Troy Rowland in December 2009, Chavez was suspended by the Nevada State Athletic Commission for seven months because a diuretic known as furosemide was found in the boxer’s blood system. Rubio’s team said that a late sample is better than nothing and is demanding that Chavez leaves a sample since some illegal substances can be found in a person’s system up to six months later. Oswaldo Kuchle, who is Rubio’s promoter, said the WBC should force Chavez to follow the organization’s own rules.

With the win Chavez raised his record to 45-0-1, with 31 KOs while Rubio fell to 53-6-1, with 46 KOs. Both fighters threw a lot of punches, but neither of them landed any big shots and neither of them was hurt during the fight. Rubio was the busier of the two, and Chavez’s face proved he did some damage over 12 rounds, but there wasn’t enough power in the challenger’s shots to stagger the champion.

It was also reported after the fight that Chavez was charged with drinking and driving in Los Angeles two weeks before the bout and has a court date on March 16. Along with his struggle to make weight, these events have led many fans to accuse him of not being mature enough to be a world-class boxer. Many fans believe he’s just living off of his father’s name and will be beaten as soon as he faces a legitimate top-five opponent.

Up until now though, he’s unbeaten, but there are still a lot of questions regarding his skill and dedication. Chavez said he’ll stay at middleweight for the time being and fight Miguel Cotto, Sergio Martinez, or Antonio Margarito next. However, Cotto’s fighting Floyd Mayweather in May and he’s not a middleweight anyway and neither is Margarito. He’s been accused of hiding behind Sulaiman and the WBC and ducking Martinez, and it looks like Margarito could be his next test.

The ‘Filipino Flash’ Nonito Donaire wasn’t too flashy on Feb. 4 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, but still did enough to win the WBO’s vacant Super Bantamweight Championship. Donaire came out on the right side of a split decision over former titleholder Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. by scores of 112-115, 117-110, and 117-110. He also scored a flash knockdown in the ninth round.

The fight started slowly as Puerto Rico’s Vasquez found Donaire’s speed and footwork a little too much. However, he seemed to get more comfortable round after round and started to loosen up. But even when Vasquez did get into a bit of a groove he usually threw just one punch at a time. They didn’t seem to have much power on them, but did cause some swelling around Donaire’s eyes.

Donaire went to Vasquez’s body quite often in the early rounds and landed some solid left hooks there. However, he strayed from this strategy and focused mainly on his opponent’s head as the rounds wore on. Donaire hurt Vasquez in the third round with a good left uppercut and then a follow left to the top of the head. He sensed that Vasquez was hurt and then unleashed a wild flurry with his opponent trapped in a corner. Vasquez survived the round though and had recovered by the start of the fourth.

Vasquez started to turn the tide in the fifth and sixth rounds when he started to follow up his left jabs with some decent right hands. Donaire came back in the seventh, eighth and ninth and dropped Vasquez in the ninth with another beautiful uppercut and left hook.

Donaire’s generally regarded by most boxing fans and experts to be one of the top five-pound-for-pound fighters in the world, but it was hard to tell against Vasquez. It was his first fight in the super bantamweight division though, so maybe that had something to do with it. With the win, Donaire raised his record to 28-1, with 18 KOs while Vazquez’s record fell to 21-2-1, with 17 KOs.

It’s also possible that Donaire’s mediocre performance could have been the result of a damaged or broken left hand. When he took his gloves off in the ring after the bout the hand wraps on his left hand were soaked in blood. However, it was unclear where it came from. Donaire knew he didn’t fight to his potential and admitted it after the fight.

He said he might stay at the 122 lb. super bantamweight division for a few more fights before thinking about moving up in weight again. There wasn’t any controversy surrounding the fight other than some trash talk in pre-fight press conferences. However, there are millions of fans questioning the score card of Ruben Garcia who judged the fight 115-112 for Vasquez, especially after Donaire dropped him in the ninth and had him on the ropes in the third round.

Donaire’s had two mediocre performances in a row now, both on national television in America. If he doesn’t pick up the pace in his next fight it’ll be hard to justify ranking him as one of the planet’s best pound-for pound boxers.

John Terry has had the captaincy of England’s national soccer team stripped from him for the second time in the past two years. This time it could be permanent though. Terry was named captain of the team originally following the World Cup in 2006 by former manager Steve McClaren. However, he’s facing a court case on a charge of racial abuse and the English Football Association informed him on Feb. 3 that he’ll no longer be the nation’s captain, but he’s still eligible to play for the team.

Terry, who is also the captain of Chelsea of the English Premier League, has been charged with verbally racially abusing Anton Ferdinand of Queens Park Rangers. Terry’s trial doesn’t begin until July, following this year’s European Championships (Euro 2012) though, and it’s believed that Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard could replace Terry as England’s skipper.

England manager Fabio Capello originally stood by Terry early on in the racial dispute, but because the Euro 2012 tournament comes before the trial the FA thought he should be replaced. The FA released a statement which said he’ll be stripped of his duties until the court case is resolved. They thought the case would go to trial before the tournament, but it was pushed back to July and Euro 2012 takes place from June 8 to July 1 in Poland and Ukraine.

The FA also said Terry hasn’t been banned from the team and Capello is free to choose him for the squad as he sees fit. England’s next game is a tune-up match against Holland on Feb. 29 David Bernstein, the chairman of the FA, spoke to Capello and Terry to explain the situation to them. Capello didn’t have a say in the final decision as it was made by the organization’s board. Capello will be the one who chooses the next captain though.

The FA wanted to make it clear that their decision in no way implies that Terry is guilty of the racial abuse accusations and they won’t comment further until the case has gone to court. Terry will still serve as captain of Chelsea and Andre Villas-Boas, the club’s manager, said he’s not happy that the FA has stripped his player of the captaincy before he’s been ruled innocent or guilty. He said he doesn’t agree with it because everybody’s presumed innocent unless they’re proven guilty and Terry hasn’t been found guilty of anything at the moment.

Terry also had England’s captaincy taken away from him two years ago after he was accused of having an affair with the girlfriend of England teammate Wayne Bridge. However, the captain’s armband was given back to him just over a year later after it was revealed the accusations were ridiculous because the woman was a just a former girlfriend of Bridge’s. Apparently Bridge couldn’t handle the decision and refused to play for England and hasn’t been selected for the team since. Gerrard could be chosen to replace Terry, but he’s often out of the squad due to injuries.

There have been a lot of sick sights at soccer stadiums over the years, but the ones in Port Said, Egypt on Feb. 1 could possibly have been the worst of all. At least 74 people died while hundreds more were injured when thousands of fans rushed the field and rioted after a league game between home team Al-Masry and the visiting Al-Ahly club.

Many fans suffocated to death in a narrow exit corridor which led to a locked gate while others were stabbed or beaten with clubs and stones as there was no escape route out of the stadium. Incredibly, thousands of fans were able to take flares, knives and other weapons to the game and many Egyptians have blamed the country’s police and armed forces for doing nothing to stop the mayhem and mass murder.

Prime Minister Kamal el-Ganzouri called an emergency session in parliament the day after the incident and dissolved the board of the nation’s soccer federation. It was also reported that the region’s police chief and governor have resigned and several soccer players announced they were leaving the sport. Also, Manuel Jose, the manager of Al-Ahly has reportedly asked the club to tear up his contract so he can return to his homeland of Portugal.

Several Egyptian lawmakers said the lack of police control was intentional and there were political overtones to the attack. Some people accused police of letting the riot take place to gain some sort of revenge against Al-Ahly soccer hooligans, who have been active protestors against the government there since former President Hosni Mubarak fell from power last February.

Supporters of Al-Ahly protested violently a year ago and it led to the police force collapsing. Recently they have clashed with the army in an attempt to put an end to Egyptian military rule. Thousands of protestors took to the streets a day after the rioting and parts of Tahrir Square were sealed off. This also resulted in clashes between security forces and protestors.

All hell broke loose on live television after the game in which Al-Masry won 3-1. Instead of celebrating the rare victory over one of the country’s best team’s Al-Masry fans stormed the field with weapons and chased opposing players and fans who attempted to escape via stadium exits, but found the doors were locked when they got there.

They were trapped there with thousands of opposing fans behind them and no way out. Witnesses said that’s where many people suffocated, were trampled or were murdered. Some others fell to their deaths from bleachers.

As the violent scenes were taking place, most of the riot police on hand just stood and watched. The stadium lights were turned off at one point and the violence carried on in the darkness. One policeman was killed while more than a dozen were injured and close to 50 arrests were made.

After the chaos politicians were pointing their fingers at each other while the Ultras, a group of soccer fans, said the police and military wanted to punish them for their role in last year’s uprising and protests. Many Ultras felt they were abused under Mubarak’s regime and have recently taken to sing anti-police songs at soccer games.

It was reported there were approximately 22,000 fans at the game with 2,000 of them supporting the visitors. Egypt has declared three days of mourning. While trouble was flaring in at the game in Port Said, a fire was set at another game in Cairo, but it’s unclear if the incidents were related.

Whether the killings were the result of organized political groups or soccer hooligans, it’s beyond belief that in this day and age people are able to take weapons into a stadium without going through security checks. The first thing all leagues around the world need to do is ban the ridiculous flares that are often set off during games. It’s not going to end the violence, but at least it’s a start.

The Pittsburgh Penguins’ Sidney Crosby, who’s considered by many to be the best hockey player in the world, is still sitting on the sidelines a year after being injured in the NHL’s Outdoor Classic game against the Washington Capitals. Crosby received a concussion in January 2011 and has played just eight games since.

The 24-year-old Crosby attempted to comeback earlier this season, but after the eight games said he was feeling concussion-like symptoms and returned to the sidelines. In late January, a doctor said Crosby had a fractured neck and that could be the cause of his problems. However, another doctor has now stated that he doesn’t have a fractured neck, but has a soft tissue injury.

There are several doctors working with the star center, but none of them know when Crosby may have picked up the injury. It could have happened back in 2011 or sometime this season when he made the short comeback. However, the medical team said the condition is treatable. Crosby last played a game on Dec. 5, 2011. He missed the last half of last season as well as the playoffs and has played just eight times this season.

The problem is, the doctors don’t know if Crosby has both a concussion and a neck injury or if the neck problem is the cause of the concussion-like symptoms. The Penguins and Crosby are obviously hoping the neck injury is the only problem he has to deal with. Crosby said he’s encouraged that the neck injury could be the root of all that ails him and will start to receive treatment on it as soon as possible. The injury isn’t considered to be career threatening, but multiple concussions are.

The league misses Crosby since he’s viewed as a legitimate star. By the time he was 22 years old he had already won the league’s MVP trophy, a scoring championship, an Olympic gold medal, and a Stanley Cup. Crosby said that he’s feeling okay, and has resumed skating, but hasn’t been cleared to practice with his teammates.

Since it’s taken over a year for doctors to properly diagnose Crosby’s injury, there have been reports that he isn’t very happy with the Penguins’ medical staff and other doctors he’s visited over the past dozen or so months. Crosby said he’s just concerned about treating the injury and getting back on the ice as soon as possible.

The original injury took place at Heinz field in Pittsburgh on Jan. 1, 2011 in the NHL’s annual outdoor game. Crosby was hit by Washington’s David Steckel and was then hit again by Victor Hedman of the Tampa Bay Lightning on Jan. 5 and was diagnosed with a concussion. The then complained of fatigue, headaches, motion discomfort, and dizziness over the next few months. He was cleared to practice in late September 2011, but didn’t return to the lineup until Nov. 21 when he scored a pair of goals and assists against the New York Islanders.

However, after scoring 12 points in eight games he was sidelined again with a re-occurrence of the concussion-like symptoms. He tried to practice with the team on Dec. 7, but said he was still suffering from headaches. He’s now skating on his own and will see if treatment for the neck injury solves his headache problem.

Women’s soccer in America suffered a major setback on Jan. 30 when the WPS (Women’s Professional Soccer) announced that the league was closing down for the 2012 season. The league, which began play in 2009, is the highest level of professional women’s soccer in North America. The WPS said that an expensive legal issue with a former franchise was the reason behind the decision.

The timing of the announcement shocked many since the American women’s team qualified for the 2012 Olympic Games in London, England just a couple of days earlier by going undefeated in the qualifying tournament. However, many of that team’s players will now be looking for a team to play with since they were members of WPS clubs.

The league has been facing trouble off the pitch since it began. The average attendance has dropped three years in a row, from 4,684 per game in its inaugural season to 3,535 last year. The league also launched with seven teams and there are now only five left, all based in the eastern states. The owner of Sky Blues FC, which is based in New Jersey, said the league made a good decision since it has to resolve all of its legal matters before it can carry on and grow. He added that it was a tough decision, but the right business one for the league.

The legal matter in question involves Dan Borislow, who is the owner of the MagicJack franchise that was based in Florida. Borislow brought a former franchise known as the Washington Freedom in 2011 and then moved it to Boca Raton. He then named it after his popular MagicJack communications company. However, Borislow didn’t exactly see eye to eye with the WPS and they clashed over several of the league’s rules.

Some of the issues they argued about were failing to pay the wages of some of his players and the size of the stadium in Boca Raton. The league decided in October 2011 to terminate the MagicJack franchise, which featured several American national team stars including striker Abby Wambach and goaltender Hope Solo. Borislow wasn’t happy with the decision to terminate his team and he then took the matter to court. The league then reinstated MagicJack as an exhibition team and said it could play seven games a season vs WPS competition. This has now led to the entire 2012 season now being called off.

Jennifer O’Sullivan of the WPS said that it’s up to the league to make sure that its players, fans, and partners get the best product available and that’s why the league is going to take its time to make sure the legal proceedings are handled properly before carrying on. She also said the league plans on resuming play for the 2013 season.

However, there are many soccer fans and insiders across the country who feel this could just be the beginning of the end for the struggling soccer league.

If you were one of the millions of boxing fans who just knew a proposed bout between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. this spring would implode, then you hit the nail on the head. The two top pound-for-pound boxers in the world were talking about getting it on this May 5 after Mayweather called Pacquiao a punk on Twitter and challenged him.

However, there were too many obstacles in the way of a showdown such as Mayweather’s upcoming jail sentence and an arena large enough in Las Vegas to hold the event. Most cynics felt Mayweather issued the challenge knowing there was no way a fight could be arranged on such short notice. Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum more or less officially put the kibosh on the fight on Jan. 30 when he said the bout won’t take place until November at the earliest, if at all.

Arum said Mayweather’s chosen date of May 5 doesn’t fit into Pacquiao’s plans since he’s going to fight on June 9 and Mayweather’s camp isn’t willing to a change since their fighter’s supposed to start his 90-day jail sentence on June 1. Arum also said Mayweather isn’t willing to fight for a 50-50 revenue split, so negotiations are off and he’s out of the picture for the time being.

Mayweather has booked Las Vegas’ MGM Grand Garden Arena on May 5, but Arum said it doesn’t make sense for the fight of the century to take place in such a small venue. He wanted to build a temporary outdoor stadium in Vegas, but said it couldn’t be finished by early May. Arum said Mayweather can go ahead and fight as scheduled while Pacquiao will box on June 9 and they can meet in November if Mayweather agrees to a 50-50 split.

Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy Promotions said everybody’s moving on. However, neither fighter has an opponent booked for their upcoming bouts yet. Miguel Cotto’s been named as a possible opponent for both of them and the undefeated Timothy Bradley has been mentioned as another option for Pacquiao, who already owns a 12th-round TKO over Cotto.

It appears to most insiders that Cotto will likely end up facing Mayweather since he doesn’t want to drop below 150 lbs. and Pacquiao doesn’t want to go higher than 147 lbs., but nothing’s certain as of yet. Arum said he wants announce the opponent for Pacquiao by Feb. 7, so they can start promoting the fight.

Arum also announced that he’s working on a fight between junior-welterweight champion Lamont Peterson and Juan Manuel Marquez for Dallas’ Cowboy stadium in May or July. Peterson won the WBA and IBF titles with a controversial split decision over Amir Khan in December and the WBA has since ordered a rematch between the two. A Peterson vs Marquez fight will mean Peterson will have to give up the WBA belt.

Mayweather still has to explain to the Nevada State Athletic Commission why he should be granted a license to fight anybody other than Pacquiao since his sentence was delayed so he could engage in a major fight. If Mayweather receives a license another option could be fighting super-welterweight titleholder Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.
